GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Picea glauca, the white spruce, is a species of spruce native to the northern temperate and boreal forests in North America.
  • Picea glauca was originally native from central Alaska all through the east, across southern/central Canada to the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Light (sandy), medium (loamy), and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soils.
  • Suitable pH: acid and neutral soils and can grow in very acid soils.
  • It prefers moist or wet soil.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT

  • Spruce trees do not have very high phosphorous needs and benefit most form an acidic fertilizer designed for evergreens or a high-nitrogen fertilizer with a formula like 12-6-4 or 10-8-6.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

  • Partial shade (only 2-6 hours of direct sunlight a day), to full and direct sun (more than 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).
  • It cannot grow in the shade.

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • Water your spruce the first year in the dry season, providing at least one watering can twice a week.
  • In pots, wait until the soil is dry to water.
