Description

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • As known as Ribes-nigrum-'Ben-Nevis'.
  • The blackcurrant, also known as black currant or cassis, is a woody shrub in the family Grossulariaceae grown for its berries.
  • It is native to temperate parts of central and northern Europe and northern Asia, where it prefers damp fertile soils and is widely cultivated both commercially and domestically.
  • The fruit is edible.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions but prefers well-drained, moisture-retentive conditions.
  • They need rich, heavy soil.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT

  • Scatter 1 tablespoon of 10-10-10 fertilizer evenly on the soil around each currant and gooseberry shrub, as soon as the plant starts growing or about 3 weeks after planting.
  • Apply the fertilizer in an 18-inch diameter around the shrubs and don't allow it to touch the stems of the shrubs.
  • Use a watering can or garden hose to water the soil immediately after fertilizing so the nutrients can reach the roots of the shrubs.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

  • It prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade.

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • Container grown bushes will normally be planted during the growing season, from April to September so heavy regular watering is necessary until they are established.
  • Blackcurrants establish more easily than almost any other fruiting plant.
