GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Crotons or Codiaeum variegatum is a subtropical, evergreen shrub, naturally occurring in Indonesia, southern Asia, and Eastern Pacific Islands.
  • A part of the Euphorbiaceae family, Croton plants are known for their showy, shiny bright leaves.
  • The colorful foliage of this plant has developed a dedicated following among gardening enthusiasts.
  • The common names are Croton Gold Dust and Sun-Spot Croton.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Well-drained, organically rich, and slightly acidic soil is necessary.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT

  • For best results, use a general houseplant fertilizer once in early spring, once in early summer, and again in mid-summer.
  • Weekly fertilization with a balanced formula fertilizer is sufficient.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

  • Your Gold Dust Croton will do best in a bright spot, as it needs lots of light (if possible 4-6 hrs. Per day) to produce the golden speckles.
  • If your croton does not get enough light, you might find the plant grows tall and lanky with spare leaves lacking the rich, dark hues.

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • During the growing season, watering should be regular to keep the soil moist.
  • Avoid overwatering as the plant does not respond well to standing water.
