GENERAL INFORMATION
- Dryopteris expansa, also known as the spreading wood fern or alpine buckler fern, is a deciduous perennial fern that grows in cool, moist forests and along stream banks in the Northern Hemisphere. It has large, triangular to egg-shaped fronds (leaves) that can reach up to 90 cm (3 ft) in length and are deeply lobed. Key features include a creeping or ascending rhizome, brown scales with a dark stripe on the stipe (leaf stalk), and circular sori (spore clusters) on the underside of the leaflets, protected by a round, horseshoe-shaped indusium.
- Dryopteris expansa thrives in moist, shaded woodland environments, where its lush, arching fronds form attractive green clumps that add texture and depth to forest floors and gardens alike.
- It is a tropical fern species and belongs to the Dryopteridaceae family.
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- Use a loamy, humus-rich soil that retains moisture but also drains well.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT
- This fern does not require frequent fertilization. A diluted, balanced fertilizer can be applied during the growing season if desired.
- Apply the fertilizer according to the package instructions, typically every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
- Reduce or suspend fertilization during the winter months.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Place in a spot with filtered or indirect, bright light.
- It prefers filtered sunlight or shade, as direct sunlight can scorch its fronds.
- Place the plant near a north or east-facing window or provide it with dappled light.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. Water regularly.
- High humidity is preferred, especially for indoor plants.
