GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Averrhoa carambola is a species of tree in the family Oxalidaceae native to tropical Southeast Asia.
  • It has a number of common names, including carambola, Star Fruit, and five-corner.
  • The crushed leaves and shoots are used by the Malays to treat chickenpox, ringworm, and headaches.
  • The fruits are also used to treat a hangover from too much drinking as well as stomach ailments.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Although the carambola tolerates various soil conditions, this tree prefers rich, loamy soils with pH levels ranging from 5.5 to 6.5.
  • You should also choose an area that has good drainage and protection from high winds.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT

  • Fertilize young star fruit trees with 1/2 pound of mixed fertilizer, with a 6-6-6-3 formulation, every 60 to 90 days until established.
  • Mature trees need fertilizing three times a year if planted in shallow soils, but only twice a year with deep soils.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

  • Carambolas prefer full sun but will tolerate partial sun.

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • These trees need consistently moist soils for best performance and have limited drought tolerance.
  • Avoid overwatering your tree because standing water often causes root rot diseases and foliage health problems.
