GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Passiflora edulis or passion fruit is a vine species of passion flower native to southern Brazil through Paraguay and northern Argentina.
  • It is cultivated commercially in tropical and subtropical areas for its sweet, seedy fruit, commonly called passion fruit.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Passion fruit vines grow on many soil types but light to heavy sandy loams with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 is the most suitable.
  • Excellent drainage is absolutely necessary.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT

  • A fertilizer high in nitrogen promotes plenty of passionfruit leaf growth at the expense of fruit and flowers.
  • Fertilize with compost, citrus foods, chicken manure, or well-rotted cow manure.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

  • Plant vines in full sun except in very hot areas, where partial shade is preferable.

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • Passionfruit has a high water requirement when fruits are approaching maturity.
  • If the soil is dry, fruits may shrivel and fall prematurely, so water frequently for short periods during dry times.
