GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Commonly known as Bat's Wing Coral Tree, Gray Corkwood, Bean tree
  • Erythrina vespertilio is a small, straggly tree, with thorns on the trunk and branches. The bark is creamy-grey, deeply furrowed and corky.  Produces scarlet to orange-red pea flowers.
  • Regular pruning promotes healthier blooms and prevents structural issues.  Techniques include removing dead or diseased branches, thinning out crowded areas to improve airflow, and shaping the canopy to encourage robust growth. 

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Erythrina vespertilio will grow in a wide range of soils as long as drainage is good and it has plenty of sun.

FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT

  • Bat's wing coral tree does not require frequent feeding.  A yearly replacement of the potting soil should be sufficient, or you can mix in some organic matter like compost or aged manure when planting.

  • It performs best in full sun and does not tolerate low light.​

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • Bat's wing coral tree benefits from watering once every two weeks. Preferring a balance between dryness and saturation, bat's wing coral tree requires careful monitoring to avoid waterlogging
