GENERAL INFORMATION
- The Joey Palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) is a slow-growing, tropical shade-lover that thrives in high humidity, consistent moisture, and bright, indirect light. Native to rainforests, it requires rich, well-draining soil and protection from direct sun and cold, making it ideal for shaded, warm, and humid climates
SOIL REQUIREMENT
- Requires rich, loamy, and well-draining soil. A mixture containing peat and bark works well to maintain moisture while providing drainage.
FEEDING/FERTILIZER
- Use a balanced (e.g., 10-10-10) slow-release fertilizer during the growing season to boost growth.
LIGHT REQUIREMENT
- Thrives in partial shade to full shade. Too much direct sun can burn the large, diamond-shaped leaves.
WATER REQUIREMENT
- Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Do not allow it to dry out completely, but avoid sitting in soggy soil.
MAINTENANCE
- Protect from strong winds, which can tear the large, structurally fragile fronds. Pruning is rarely needed, except to remove dead fronds
