GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Pachira Aquatica is a tropical wetland tree in the mallow family Malvaceae, native to Mexico, Peru, Brazil and in Central and South America where it grows in swamps.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

  • Use a well-draining potting mix. A mix of perlite, vermiculite, and potting soil can work well.
  • Repot if the plant becomes root-bound, usually every 2-3 years.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT

  • Once your indoor or outdoor plant is established, fertilize it every two weeks with an all-purpose fertilizer.
  • Fertilize only during the spring and summer growing period at half the dosage on the fertilizer label and stop feeding during the fall and winter.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

  • Variegated Pachira aquatica needs bright indirect light to maintain its variegation. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. "Lots of sun, don't let it fully dry out, and leaving it alone has seemed to work well for me."
  • Ensure the plant gets even light on all sides to prevent it from leaning towards the light source, rotate regularly.

WATER REQUIREMENT

  • Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot, especially in variegated varieties. "Water the plant only when the soil volume is approximately 75% dry."
  • Make sure the pot has good drainage to avoid waterlogging.
  • Drooped leaves could indicate that you are not watering often enough to keep the soil evenly moist.

HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE

  • Variegated Pachira aquatica prefers moderate humidity. You can increase humidity by placing a tray of water near the plant or using a humidifier.
  • Keep the plant in a temperature range of 65-80°F (18-27°C).

FEEDING

  • Use a balanced, low-phosphorus fertilizer every 2-3 months.
