GENERAL INFORMATION

• The pomegranate originated in the region extending from Iran to northern India and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region.
• The sweetly tart juice from the “seeds” makes a delicious and nutritious snack high in potassium and vitamin C.
• The origin of the pomegranate is not completely known; however, this fruit is commonly grown in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
• The name pomegranate translates to “seeded apple”. This fruit is usually about the size of a large orange.

SOIL REQUIREMENT

• Although the carambola tolerates various soil conditions, this tree prefers rich, loamy soils with pH levels ranging from 5.5 to 6.5.
• You should also choose an area that has good drainage and protection from high winds.

FEEDING/FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT

• Fertilize young star fruit trees with 1/2 pound of mixed fertilizer, with a 6-6-6-3 formulation, every 60 to 90 days until established.
• Mature trees need fertilizing three times a year if planted in shallow soils, but only twice a year with deep soils.

LIGHT REQUIREMENT

• Carambolas prefer full sun but will tolerate partial sun.

WATER REQUIREMENT

• It needs frequent watering in warm, sunny weather.
• Drier soil does no harm and is even beneficial in promoting healthy roots but severe wilt can damage plants.
